"From Cool to Cringe, What Happened to America's Culture?"

Excellent article in The Spectator, which is 2 months old, but I just found now: https://spectator.us/american-cool-cringe-end/

Dude raises a ton of excellent points, and while written from a mildly right wing slant, it doesn't fail to take aim at Trump and various right-wing conspiritards, as well.

I can't disagree with much of it.

What are you telling me its not worth subscribing to a guy who writes amazing articles like these? (in fairness I google cached the article and it was much more balanced than I thought).

If they haven't been to Spectator yet this month, they don't need that link.

Or they could just go incognito mode for it. But yeah that works too.

Usually I don't like pieces which try too hard to seem smart, but I found myself really enjoying this one.

It drew me in with the bashing of that awful "Imagine" video.

I deleted all the arguing here about desertrunner. Don't clutter my threads with this shit.

I will, however, start a separate thread to address the desertrunner issue. Stand by.

I think I know the cringe part but the cool part, complete with a number a assassinations, was the people's reaction to an unfettered capitalist war machine with god on it's side.

Whetherit's full on communism or full on capitalism we end up at the same place.
Neither power structure gives a damn about the the worker bees. Centuries of hell
have proven power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The impoverished eventually rise up. Those at the top simply don't care
and are living the American dream

Some decent points but this exact sentiment can probably be found at nearly every point in American history by an aging guy bemoaning how it ain't like it was back then.

The Cardi B sentiment was applied to Elvis once upon a time.

More amplified in the present given curated news sources but same old story: grouchy aging boomer.

The difference is that most of the essay wasn't whining about 'dem loud kids and 'der loud music. Yeah, I guess the Cardi B part was a little of that, but most of the essay was pointing out the 2020's supposed icons of cool were acting lame and cringey.

The "Imagine" video, which he referenced near the beginning, is a good example of this. We didn't have that in previous generations. All the people he referenced actually were cool in their day, and they didn't do stupid shit like this -- at least not stuff made for public consumption.

Look how many celebrities got together for this, and not one realized how tone-deaf and embarrassing it was.

He's basically pointing out that American culture, while once emulated and admired from afar, has turned into a combination of conspiratorial right wingers and hypersensitive left wingers, and it all just looks stupid.

    I can't argue with that.

John Lennon did a lot of cringeworthy things.

You cannot be cool when you are too worried about not offending anyone and trying to be all inclusive. Like feeling the need to say "amen" and "awoman" at the end of a prayer.

Any truth to the rumor that we now have to call the country both Yemen and Yawoman?

Seriously though, the CCP of China must be laughing their asses off at this point.

I was reluctant to read the essay cause you usually trigger disappointment. I threw the dice today. Indeed it was a fun romp.

Will Lloyd lifts his description of millennials nearly word for word from Steve Bannon. I found that ironic or at the very least amusing.

The unlucky millennials who came of age during the Great Recession desired security rather than glory. They were neurotic, indigent and as downwardly mobile as a meteorite. With resources growing scarcer, they seemed to be begging for clout, foundation grants, prizes, sinecures, money, attention — but not, weirdly, sex, which they seemed neither to want nor enjoy
I continue to contend the next batch of promising conservatives just finished “Finding Nemo” and are being set down for their afternoon nap.

“But dead bodies always release gas” was a Sonatine-grade line too.
