I'm starting to lean toward vegas1369's theory that this is a shingles re-outbreak.
That would perhaps explain the back pain, which is sometimes associated with shingles (and which I had in 2010 prior to the rash appearing).
However, the back pain dates back to late June, whereas the back pain in 2010 preceded the rash by only 2-3 days.
Another similarity to 2010 is the fact that I had a number of colds in mid-2010, followed by shingles, and I always thought the colds caused it to happen (along with a DPT shot I had because Ben was about to be born).
I've had only one other year where I've caught so many colds in such a short time, and that's 2017.
Either way, I have a feeling this shit isn't going away on its own.

100% not a mosquito bite. We get them all the time here and unless you get an allergic reaction or scratch it so hard it bleeds I've never seen any look like that. Also, looks very diff from a normal spider bite up here.
I think the random bruising also tells you it is something else. Just go to the doctor and pay the co payment. We know you like to self diagnose before you go, but I think for atleast some of those it isn't a bite and it's time to go see a real doc and not read WebMD (fun fact is that KKR is going to destroy that site once they buy it...).

Could it just be a reaction to touching a plant? I know when i touch poison oak I get a similar looking rash/redness. It can also spread really easily and wreck havoc on your skin if your are sensitive.

Infection due to some kind of bite not from a mosquito. Thats what the doc will tell you I bet. Then give you an antibiotic and it will go away in a few days. The most likely thing is you bringing in some sort of bug(s) with you from the forest and it/them attacking you in your sleep. I'd say if they start getting bigger go to the doctor for sure.

It could be a double whammy in that he did get bugs bites and then brushed up against a plant he was allergic to. The oil from that plant then got into the bug bite wound as well as hit the top part of his hand. That would explain why the top part of his hand looks sort of like a poison oak reaction and the lower part looks like mutant bug bites (combo of bug bite/poison oak/plant allergy). Plant based reaction would also make sense given it is on that part of his hand(real easy for that part of your hand to brush against a plant).

Yeah, good analysis. The marks on wrist are also circular (especially the dark one) which indicates either Todd was stationary, or the insect was stationary (sitting on his wrist).
However the marks on the side of his hand look more oblong, like something affected a slightly larger area that touched his hand as he was moving.
Druff -
Wash the shit out of your clothes including shoes and anything that could have possibly come in contact with plants on your trip (including dogs). The oil can still spread. The best cure i found for a poison oak reaction i found by accident. I used to get the shit all the time as a kid in California. There is something about the chlorine in pools that seemed to work the best. It would dry it out so it didn't hurt /itch that much.

Maybe I'm focusing too much on the mosquitoes, when in reality I had something brewing at the same time, and it's just a coincidence that the first issue showed up on the same day I went out into the woods.
I'm also wondering if the lower back issues, which seemed to resemble back spasms, could possibly be related to this in some way?

looks to me like a bite from a wolf spider or something similar, usually in grouping of three. they hurt and tch but will go away in a week or two depending on the severity.
they are every were here. In the morning there are webs for you to walk through especially this time of year. I actually have a bite on my leg has been bugging me for a few weeks but its going away slowly.

Agree with the above, I live in a mosquito infested part of the country, and I've never seen a bite look like that. I'd watch carefully and be ready to see a doctor the moment it gets worse. Preferably a dermatologist to start with rather than a doc in a box.

hopefully it is just a spider bite, lyme disease would also have to be ruled out.
