(CNN) – Some popular portable chargers are now part of a major safety recall.

Anker is pulling nearly half a million power banks off the market because their lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing fire and burn risks.

The power banks were sold nationwide at retailers including Best Buy and Target and elsewhere online between August 2023 and June of this year.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said there have been 33 reports of fires or explosions tied to the devices.

I have two from Anker.

One is this, the Anker Powerhouse II 400



I bought it in 2021. I forget why. It sat barely used until the recent power failures, at which point I was so glad I had it.


I just got this one yesterday. Anker Solix F1200. I didn't get the solar panel but maybe I will. The problem is that my main need for it is in the winter and late fall, which is when the sun is lowest in the sky (and the days are short!)



The second one is way bigger than the first -- both in capacity and physical size. The second one is 42 pounds.

First one's capacity is 387 watt hours. Second one is 1229 watt hours -- about 3.17x.

The second one has a hypercharge feature which is great for power failures, meaning I only have to kill an hour in Starbucks to get it up to 80%.

The second one also can run just about any device -- including high wattage ones like space heaters or coffee makers. Not that I'd run a space heater on it, because that would drain it in less than an hour. But it can. The first one can only go up to 400w.

Yes, I read and understood that. Thats why I said "might". Recalls can expand and items added, but regardless, I felt Druff should know about this.

Plus he has two of them, one is a newer model, could be effected.

He's not wrong about my having recalled Anker products.

I have a lot of powerbanks by Anker, from that big one pictured above to very small ones.

My smallest one was actually recalled due to starting fires, but I didn't realize it until I already had it with me in Europe. I didn't want to throw it away because I had it for awhile and it never seemed to overheat. Anyway, on one of the European airlines I flew, they freaked the fuck out when they saw it. I was told that I couldn't use it, AND that I couldn't put it away! I had to leave it out and babysit it to make sure it didn't spontaneously catch fire. LOL!!!

They didn't even realize it was one of the recalled ones. They'd have really flipped if they knew that.

I still haven't done anything about it.
