Nah, this system is self correcting. If it's not working out for the majority down the line, they will have to tools to correct it.
What if an elected head of state disregards our democratic principles? DO NOT WORRY. The constitution protects against any malfeasance by providing equal legislative powers to both the courts and congress. That should do it.
So this is America. Anybody elected to high office is immune from prosecution? Yeah.
