What do we think about this ruling

Playing $1/2 at the local casino. I play there all the time im a straight shooter/nit I play my hand dont angle people and go about my day

Run of the mill pot heads up against a reg. Something like $40 in the pot on the river (nothing of significance). Villain is first to act, im not watching him but dealer says “check to you” I check back and flip over my cards. As soon as I flip them villain puts out $25 and says “I never checked”. Dealer claims bet stands? She claims it’s a dealer mistake and floor upholds her decision, I just folded and didn’t end up making a huge fuss about it because of the small dollar amount but I did argue it, based on the fact that I think it’s fucked up he was able to bet after I had already checked? Like what’s to prevent someone from just saying they didn’t check any other time? Seemed sketchy, I would have lost anyway so maybe I’m wrong just curious what others think

    Interesting situation.

The dealer's claim isn't the end-all, be-all of action. For example, if the guy did not check, then he would be getting screwed by not being able to bet with the better hand.

What did the other players say? Did any of them see/hear a check? That's what I'd go by if I were the floor. If nobody saw evidence the guy checked, he should be allowed to bet. If at least one (and hopefully more) other player saw/heard him check, I would rule it a check, especially if the person claiming to have heard it was reliable/neutral.

The guy was probably angle-shooting, in that he should have said something as soon as the dealer said "checked to you". It seems he did not, and let you just turn over your cards. It's possible he didn't hear what the dealer said to you, but it looks like an angling to me.

I have had it occur before, at both cash and tournaments, where the dealer erroneously claimed I checked. As soon as I hear such a thing, I loudly object and insist I did not check.

thanks for the reply Druff, yeah the floor pretty much agreed with you and said the dealer makes mistakes and since noone saw the guy actually check (he was adamant he didn't) the action can stand. They guy next to me who watched it play out actually agreed with me that it shouldn't have been allowed but sounds like its commonplace to allow that. I just feel its weird since if a dealer mucks your hand by accident you can't go back and fix it, but with an accidental check you can? So I can fake check to try and fake out the dealer and then claim I never actually checked after I see how the other player reacts? Seems to open up some angling but I don't think the guy was intentionally doing it just that someone could in the future

I basically agree fully with Druff

Probably good you didn’t make a huge fuss but I think the guy took a bit of a cheap shot hoping to win an extra $20

If you go there a lot smart to not have a blow up with floor manager over a small pot (I would have erupted though)

This kind of thing happens frequently where I play 1-2-3 and 2-3-5. it's due to laziness on the part of players and dealers and willingness of a lot of players to take a cheap shot if given the opportunity. There is often some perceived hand motion which a player interprets as a check. There should be a T-shirt that says "I never checked" it happens so often. The ruling usually goes in favor of the player who says he didn't check.
I have learned to pay close attention to anyone still in the pot. There have been times when I have seen or heard nothing to indicate a check until the dealer says "check to you" and I ask "Did you check?" and the player nods or taps the table. Also, if the other player was the last to give significant action I might say check and then wait for him to turn his cards up first.

Being a dealer would be so boring I’d barely be able able to pay attention.
