He may never have been caught, if not for that manifesto. If you remember, his brother discovered some of Ted's writing while cleaning out his mother's house, and noticed a lot of similarities to the Unabomber's manifesto, and reported it. People often neglect how unique writing styles can be. If you write enough, people who have seen your writing in the past will start to notice familiar items.

actually i think his brother had a lawyer reach out to the police and tell them that if they took the death penalty off the table, he would turn him in.

I have to brag just for a second because when I first heard about AI, you know, it’s not my thing, although my uncle was at MIT. One of the great professors, 51 years, whatever, longest-serving professor in the history of MIT. Three degrees in nuclear, chemical, and math. That’s a smart man. Kaczynski was one of his students. Do you know who Kaczynski was? There’s very little difference between a madman and a genius.
