The Ewing Theory - Maple Leafs

ABC is televising game 7 between the Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins tonight at 8pm. If I understand correctly, it is the first time a NHL first round game 7 has been broadcast nationally since 1972.

As a recent cord cutter I find this humorous and ironic.

The Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since the Mustang was invented. They are the Dodgers of hockey if that helps.

Austin Matthews is a star on the Leafs. The criticism of the Leafs has been they spent all their cap money on 4 players and they have no depth. (Dodgers?). Matthews was chasing 70 goals toward the end of the season. The whole team focused on this personal achievement without regard to winning or losing.

Auston Matthews has been out the last few games with “food poisoning”. The Leafs during this period recovered from a 3-1 deficit to 3-3 and thus this evening’s final and deciding game. Matthews was seen at this morning’s practice. LOL.

Some Leafs clubhouse kid is gonna write a book years from now in which he confesses he was the guy who tainted Matthews food.

I heard someone invoke the Bill Simmon’s Ewing Theory. The notion that keeping the alleged star out of the playoff game makes the team better. Until today I felt I led a full life with children and friends only to be gobsmacked. It’s like being unaware of gravity. I get the theory. I invented the Kershaw meme for chrissake. I just never knew there was a term for it.

If Matthews plays tonight and they lose… epic. The Bruins had the most wins last year and got bounced in the first round. Despite being up 3-1. If the Bruins lose in similar fashion again there will be firings and epic sports talk. The Leafs? The Leafs are the Leafs.

If Kershaw doesn’t play does that mean the Dodgers might win this year?

    It’s been quite a morning.

In terms of handicap. I cannot believe the defence (Canadian spelling. Nice touch eh?). Bruins Marchand shots on goal were like zero - shut down. The lazy Leafs don’t play defense. It’s a brand I think. Who are these guys? I have a Bruins series ticket but lean Leafs.

It's strange how something can miss you. I think more than anyone on the forum, I would have laid a million dollars to win 50k you'd be familiar with that term given you read about sports from so many varied sources and it's so commonly cited. Its always talked about in sports betting talk and people viewing line movements as overcorrections with stars out.

I feel like every other article after the Nats won the WS the season after Harper left mentioned it. My mid-season Cavs were perfect example. They lost their 4 best players during that time all for extended periods and ran off like 18 out of 19. They got healthy and were meh ever since.

They often use it in business articles, like Apple post Jobs.

You must have read a dozen articles that mentioned it and somehow skimmed over it.

I am a wonder indeed. I am never a good bet BCR.

Interestingly no one else made that observation.

I am the same way. Someone will refer to something, and I will say I am unfamiliar, and they'll say no you know x, and I say no I don't. Then I will see it referenced a dozen times in the next year and understand how it baffled them. It's only baffling when it's in your wheelhouse.

    Leafs gonna Leaf.

    They just deferred/delayed the pain.

Matthews is an elite scorer. Marner is a magician. Nylander has been amazing.

But you can’t win in the playoffs without a goalie or defense.

Toss in some bad luck. We will finally find out why Nylander was out then Matthews then Woll.

Just hit FLA spread -1.5 games +125. Sprinkle -170 series

Bruins never solved Bergeron and Kejci absence. Swayman ain’t an everyday goalie if you wanna live the hot goalie dream.

Pasta still trying to figure out is he a playmaker or goal scorer. He’s a goal scorer. Bruins have issues

They tanked for Leafs and now it’s the iron they gotta face. Can’t hide

When I replied to this thread I was over in PA because my friend had a 104 fever and was at the ER and I was with her boys and they were playing that Xbox shit with their headphones screaming at each other all around me while I browsed forum and I felt like my response came off different than I intended.

I used to love Simmons page 2 on ESPN despite his Boston homerism. Ewing Theory, One More Toss for the Dooze about his dying dog had me damn near in tears. He’s a better writer than podcaster, and I like his podcasts.

I know you’re not a homer to the degree I am, but I guess I kind of thought all Boston people read Simmons like they read Ryan. That’s why I was surprised because you’re such a sports fan and from Boston. When I reread it, it kind of came off like how didn’t you know this shit, which certainly wasn’t my intention.

I came late to Simmons. I’ve faded ESPN for longer than I can remember, so there is that. As well, I am not an NBA guy although I recognize he was NBA when the game was still good. Just never happened.

I absolutely love his homerism for movies with a Boston theme and the Beantown celebs. Simmons is old school. He’s that age and the takes are kinda precious in that way.

I have gaps in pop culture (especially movies and television) that you could drive a truck thru. I never saw a single ep of The Wire in real time. I have never seen a Batman movie but I’m about to crack. 80’s and 90’s television references from Druff and Harry Hollywood rarely intersect with my life. My missing list is absolutely unrivaled.

I take a lot of pride in that.

Facebook, TikTok and most sosh are the 2020’s version of simp entertainment that I have proudly avoided.

Sanlmar is literally Ewing theory for pop culture.
