he was offered early release once they found out his father was a rear admiral at the time (his father and grandfather would both become 4 star admirals)

he declined because it went against the POW's code: first one in, first one out

these guys were tortured to within an inch of their lives and he could have been back home within 48 hours

instead he chose to stay, how many of us could have done that?
