Make it a legal binding agreement, period. This is not rocket science or asking for too much here, this is typical of any money owed arrangement and should have been suggested by Jasep from the beginning. Anything else is not acceptable. In fact, the whole song and dance blog in the OP is just more proof that he is completely full of shit. This could have been very simple.

To me it's more about having been down this road plenty of times before with people I have known and cared about, and seen the exact type of behavior. When you've been fucked over enough in life by people you thought were friends who took advantage of your generosity, it's shit like this that just gets under your skin in a big way. I have dealt with tons of people over the years who have followed this "make 1 or 2 payments and vanish" routine to the letter. Not all of them were scammers, either. Many were just degenerates or onetime friends who had borrowed money from me, stiffed me, and then suddenly came to me with this grandiose plan to make things right with monthly payments, only to vanish after making either one or two. I had another guy I had a court judgment against (he hit my car and caused thousands of dollars of damage, and was uninsured), who promised to make payments for a year, and then made the first one and vanished on me.

In some states if you have an unpaid civil judgment against someone you can administratively have their driver's license suspended, which now in some states means an automatic night in jail regardless of excuse. A lawyer wouldn't be needed if the judgment is still good.
