Don't feel bad. My first real chess experience was when my dad took down to the local chess club when I was 13. It was supposed to be both kids and adults, except that on that day there was some big hockey tournament and all but one kid had gone to it. I had to sit down and play about half a dozen Sonatine's that afternoon both in terms of intelligence and social graces. My chess career was over before I knew it had begun... I never came back and instead developed a chronic pot habit.
