    Toughened/Tempered... same stuff.

"Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension."

Weather on October 30 in Ensenada:

    High 80, Low 57

The day before was almost identical.

With such moderate weather and not a large difference between the high and low, it is unlikely that the window busted due to sudden temperature change.

The windows break sometimes from rapid temperature changes (in the positive direction) due to 2 factors:

    1) Heat expands the molecules in the glass, weakening it.

    2) The air pressure in a closed car will increase if the car heats up, and this pressure (combined with the weakened windows) can cause the windows to burst.

However, while already uncommon in the first place, when it does happen, it's either when a car sits in the sun on a hot day, or when a car sitting outside on a cold morning rapidly heats up due to a quick rise in temperature (often combined with direct sun exposure).

For example, in 5000-foot-elevation type mountain communities, it is not unusual to see springtime highs in the low 80s and lows in the high 20s. So if you park your car overnight outside in one of these places, it drops below freezing, and then it heats up super rapidly (AND your car sits in the sun) in the morning, then a window burst wouldn't be a surprise.

However, on an 80/57 spread in Ensenada, not so much.

    good post Druff

after looking inside and out of the car, I'm not convinced it was a gunshot

but when the window shattered, it made a very loud 'pop' sound....loud enough to make all of scatter. It sure sounded like it could have been a gunshot, but the interior of the car is unscathed, with no visible damage , or evidence of a slug. I scoured it top to bottom

I suppose it could have been some random piece of material falling from the sky, (highly unlikely obv) and again, no evidence of any foreign material

the most plausible explanation is that it simply expanded with the heat and popped, but it was rather cool at the time, only 10:30 AM...and there was a distinct hole the size of a volleyball....which isn't consistent with the type of damage that would result from a gradual temperature change.

I honestly don't know what to think at this point

    the mystery remains unsolved

You said your windows were down. Wouldn't that make it even less likely of the back popping out?

that's why the temperature change implosion/explosion theory just doesn't make sense (even though it seems like the most likely scenario)

it was nice and cool outside at the time, and I had my driver and passengers windows wide open

    weird

so tyde drove his truck from oregon to mexico and now the window blows out because it went from balmy to slightly less balmy out?

    ok just checking.

where were the glass shards/pieces from the rear window?

    (a)mostly in the vehicle interior rear and disbursed >> gunshot propelling broken glass into vehicle;

(b)all near rear window on car inside, outside and within the rear tail gate as if dropped down from break point >>temperature pressure caused breaking

I worked for Libbey Owens Ford (Pilkington) tech center in the 90's, those back and side windows don't just break by themselves.

The edge of the glass is the weak point of the window, if the edge gets a little chip it weakens the glass and could break at any time (not like a windshield) and they do pop pretty good when they go.

Looking at the pic posted, the bottom right looks like it could have started there. If you had a pic directly behind I could tell more.

Not saying it wasn't shot out, just wanted to give you more info.

it looks to me like someone locked their keys inside, ripped the rubber seal from under the bottom of the glass hatch, and then attempted to pry it open from the bottom right corner

GrenadaRoger: good catch---also, the window looks buckled outward along the cracks, as if there was force from inside the car

I washed it 5 days before that pic

you'd be amazed how quickly dust accumulates around here ...cars, brick floors...everything really

there is a little car wash place about a mile from me that does an amazing job, inside and out....for 100 pesos (about 8 bucks)

I'm living in a beachfront resort community

not the fucking barrios of Guatemala

some of you seem to have this misconception that Ensenada is this crime ridden , cartel infested city

nothing could be further from the truth

granted, if you head into central Mexico, it gets dangerous.

But the Baja coast is as safe as anywhere else

safer than L.A. or Chicago or any other big city

it's super mellow here, and I haven't had a single instance yet where I felt threatened, or in danger of being robbed

    Marty,

Over 90% of us live all over the us and havent been shot at during our entire lives.

You've been there a few months, and have already had your window shot out, and you are telling us that your area is safer than ours and you dont feel threatened

did you even bother to read the last 2 pages of this thread before you opened your ginger cock hole ?

it's been decided that it wasn't a gunshot

no slug was found inside my car and there was no evidence of interior damage caused.
