This looks like it's going to be a huge fail.

National Lampoon's Vacation is very '80s and can't really be remade in modern times. Besides, it pretty much exhausted most of the LOL family vacation follies, especially with its lame sequels. They need to leave this classic alone and not attempt to recreate the magic.

In this version, Rusty Grizwold (originally played by Anthony Michael Hall, but Ed Helms in this film) will be middle-aged and take his family on a vacation just like his dad did in the '80s.

It already sounds like direct-to-video garbage, but it's not.

I can't imagine this being good.

The original was great because it was a mixture of blatant in-your-face humor and very subtle humor. Even the gross-out humor (which I usually hate) was done well, when Aunt Edith ate the dog piss sandwich.

There was even the subtle swipe at Disney, where "Marty Moose" was a fictionalized Mickey Mouse with idealistic devotees, and the owner of Wally World looked and acted like a mixture of Roy and Walt Disney.

I also loved the creative opening theme, with the funny postcards from various places around the country (all of them real, many from a long time ago):
