We got a few Oculus Rift Developers Kits

This thing is bad ass. It is the first virtual reality experience that actually works. You really feel as if you are "there."

Looks as if the commercial version is only going to be a couple hundred bucks too.

virtual porn is on its way

Saw this the other day for a new fighter jet game. Had never heard of it until then. How expensive is it for someone to buy this add on? How different is this from 3d glasses? Is it difficult to program into software?

It is easy to port games into it so I imagine there will be a lot that hit the market once it is released. They just hired the guy that created Doom as their CTO. I think it would be around 200 bucks for the glasses when they come out. It is so fluid, you can turn around all look at all facets of a 3d world. One our tech guys did the roller coaster simulator and almost threw up. He fell on his ass like 4 times , pretty funny. It is crazy realistic.

Here is the guy from Myth Busters checking out an earlier developer kit (the one I have is HD and the one he is using does not)

If Occulus Rift can actually hit their target of $300, they will sell a massive number of them. I will buy one right away.

It's funny. Virtually Reality is all the rage in the mid 90s. Everyone gets disappointed that it's not going to happen any time soon. And right when we had forgotten about it, it comes roaring back.

Funny I didnt even know that game was integrated yet.

I am not into this shit but this adult integration looks like it is the best one out there:

    http://www.chathouse3d.com/

It will be interesting to see if porn can be shot with 360 cameras and how that could work with the Oculus. Or maybe even 360 cams for premium cam shows.

I got from a good source it may even be 199... We shall see. It is amazing that so many companies have tried this and failed (big ones like Sony) and then a company that started as a Kickstarter does it right.

Personally, I could never use this for a first person shooter as I couldnt deal with the motion sickness. However, I see anyone being able to use this for MMOs or any type of exploring type simulations/games. I have tried a dozen of these headsets over the years and this is the first that really creates the sense that you are there. IMO it will not be a novelty item that comes and goes. It will be a platform that a lot of developers will make software for.

The public awareness of this doesn't seem like it is mainstream just yet.

Is there any chance to get in the ground floor (ok maybe the 5th floor) with some investment. Do they have the patents to this technology? Will there be a big player (Microsoft/Sony) that can get this stuff to work with a bit of backward engineering?

Computer games are ripe for the next paradigm - maybe this is it.

The best bet is to make some kind on indie game that take advantage of the Oculus hardware. I have pretty much played every demo they have for it and this is what I found.

    1. IT would be RIDICULOUSLY sick if Grand Theft 5 Auto worked with the Oculus Rift.
    2. I think it will become popular in the MMO worlds like Warcraft and these other ones.
    3. People will use it for porn.
    4. The best market for the device are games and applications that allow you to explore.
    5. There could be a lot of therapeutic uses for the device. Because you really feel you are somewhere else it could help people with heights, phobias (maybe such as spiders) and things along those lines.
    6. It will be awesome for simulators. for example, flight simulators.

Ironically, I dont think 1st person shooter games are going to what is the most popular. The Oculus Rift is more built for exploring than it is for fast action type games. This is because I think a lot of hard core gamers are not going to be able to stomach the motion sickness that comes with a lot of use the device. I understand that some people get more motion sickness than others but with the 1st person shooters I have to say it is pretty intense.

If I was going to built an application for this it would be some kind of crazy lazer light show in a type of virtual planetarium that would sync up to music. You could then fly around and look at the wave lengths as they pulsed to the music. I would also add a lot of other visual elements. There are great opportunities to build virtual environments where people can go into with the Oculus and just check out. It doesnt have to be an environment where they are running around shooting people. In fact, the best ones I have seen are the ones where you are basically a god flying over landscapes, mountains or taking a spacecraft and trying to land it on mars.

btw, you bring up an interesting point about patents. I am not sure what the status is on patents with this technology but virtual reality has been around forever now and until now has pretty much failed every time. This makes me think that either Oculus has a patent pending on their technology or that this concept is so old that any patent that was originally filed for it is more than 20 years old. Patents only last for 20 or so years depending on filing date.

I agree. My favorite Disney ride is Soaring Over California at the California Adventure, where you are flying over landscapes and they are simulating motion. It's not wild, just relaxing and really cool. I wish I had that thing in my house and I could just ride it when feeling stressed.

Even though the VR version would lack the motion simulating aspect, I think it would still be really cool, especially if you could control where you go, rather than be a slave to a pre-made film.

I hope there's enough advancement in stuff like this for me to enjoy before I die. I'm sure Benjamin will have all kinds of awesome stuff in his lifetime, as he might even see the year 2100.
