As you might remember, I've had to recently use my phone for tethering to my computer in order to broadcast PFA Radio from certain Vegas hotels, as sometimes the Wifi isn't good enough to consistently do so.

If you don't call and ask for them to hold a room for you early in the day, you'll get the last remaining ones, which are almost always shit.

A lot of this is status-dependent, too. They sometimes will not hold a room for you if you're below Diamond (or equivalent status wherever you're going), but sometimes you can talk them into it anyway.

My experience at Paris is always fairly good, because I know the property really well, call in advance to have a good room held, and know how to avoid the various upcharges and bullshit. And because I'm Diamond, so I get treated better and can also skip lines.

In Vegas, hotels will walk all over you if you don't assert yourself. However, even asserting yourself will only go so far if you don't have the proper status level. Your casino tier level makes a tremendous difference regarding how they treat you. My one bad experience at Paris recently occurred when I lapsed down to gold status (bottom tier), and I was treated like an asshole. So I can understand how Pipes had a bad experience too.

I agree that Vegas is increasingly pushing away the average Joe, especially ones who aren't experienced with the companies and properties like I am.
    What do you mean tether?

    You mean hot spot?

That’s what I had to do use my phone hot spot, but even that had a slow connection

Huge hassle for me as it made like 30 min of work tasks take 1hr +

Maybe I’ll call and demand my resort fee back but at the same time it’s a business expense and I need some tax write offs I guess
Yes, I mean a hotspot. Tethering is an old term, as it originally meant actually connecting a wire between your phone and computer. I still use that term because I'm old.

Deal: Is it exhausting being this Irish?

    @Nicky

I don’t think Druff has any connection to your world. You ran out at the last second to a trade show that was held at the Paris. You weren’t planning a wedding

You grab a last minute flight and a room. It’s not your raison d'être. As a normie you aren’t gonna invest hours in what should be pretty mundane

Your expectation for comfort and service is what branding is all about and your post was probably an on point trip report.

You want a water you grab one - turns out it’s $11. “Fuck them”, you think. You need water not to have to play some board game with the hotel. This is why people hate Vegas.

That end of the strip is pretty seedy, I recall. It can only have gotten worse the past few years. You affirmed that.

    Paris is banned

You didn’t do anything wrong, Nicky. Chin up.

I just had a flashback of booking a trade show last minute. Giving almost no thought to it

I get out of a meeting and I have half an hour to make the flight. I’m prolly driving 80 mph on the Mass Pike.

I park in Logan central parking with 15 minutes to departure and sprint full speed from my car to the gate. I make it. I’m OJ Simpson. Real life inspired that iconic commercial.

No self check in. No TSA. No bullshit about bags.

Stewardess likely gave me a free scotch and a hot towel. Clean ashtray between me and my fellow passenger. Sitting & wondering if I remembered my gun in the overhead.

Flying is the nut low now.

    Right, exactly

I appreciated Druffs knowledgeable feedback and suggestions, it is interesting to see the measures he puts in place to receive proper treatment at a hotel.

For me though, it is not a realistic option or use of my time, so in some instance I must suffer as I am not willing to take the actions required to get VIP Treatment

I can't be changing rooms at 1AM when I have to be up at 6AM and I can't be negotiating water prices when I really am just in a rush to get to my room and lay down for a few hours

Show up, perform, collect the check, then I'm gone

Already back in Florida, got a solid 8 hours of work in today now about to go lift some weights and hit the sauna

Vegas is a confirmed rip off shit hole, I will be back before you know and it will diligent keep the forum updated on any improvements or further disintegration of Vegas

I remember early Atlantic City as a wet nosed kid. They gave you stuff to entice you to give them your action. They’d fly god damned anyone with a pulse down on a charter for free. Give you a room (pay taxes only) match play, free drinks and a steak dinner. Sure you lost but it was fun. You might leave with only lint in your pockets but no regrets. They made an effort.

Vegas was like that. Now it feels like the average Vegas hotel is run with all the personal charm you expect from a Publix supermarket. There are exceptions

I’m coming to Vegas for the 2nd time ever, staying less than 24 hours.

I got a cheap room but don’t plan on using it

I’m gonna walk from the airport to the sphere

If you get too caught up with, "I don't want to go through the trouble", you end up in shit situations later and then have a shitty time.

Vegas hotels count on people coming in with the mentality of, "I just need the room for sleeping", and thus let maintenance go to shit. Then people realize that you need it more than just sleeping, and even if you try to just use it to sleep, you have a shitty night of sleep when it's noisy, smelly, hot, cold, or dirty.

This is a case of where an ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure. This is especially true if you're going for multiple nights.

Regarding the nickel and diming, again, if it doesn't bother you, cool for you. But even Knockout Nicky Pipes was bugged enough about the $11 water to where he mentioned it here.

I think a lot of people these days just don't want to feel like putting effort into preventing shitty travel experiences, and then bitch later when things aren't the way they were expecting/hoping.

Reminds me of my conversations with people about cruising.

They tell me that they hate cruising. I ask about their cabin situation, they tell me they stuffed a family of 4 into an inside cabin. I ask about the food, and they tell me they didn't eat at any specialty restaurants. I ask about the shore excursions, and they tell me they took a shitty ship-run tour because they didn't feel like arranging a private one with locals. I ask why they gambled in the casino with horrible odds and rules, and they say "because I was bored". I ask if they bought the internet while onboard, and they said no, they just felt compelled to disconnect from the world, even though they were bored during sea days. I ask if they followed my advice as to when to purchase the cruise. They tell me that they bought way in advance and were afraid my advice would lead them to miss the cruise. Well, yeah, no wonder you had a shitty time.

    Same concept applies here.

Cruises are tough if you are not used to them. The shows and comedians are really blah, but whatever they are free so you do them. I do like the internet package and getting a $9 coffee and parking in a corner away from everyone for a couple hours. The casino is fun at the all day at sea, craps is pretty cool. Fuck I won $900 in an afternoon a couple weeks ago like in 90 minutes. Table was on fire. LOL, I rolled once and tossed a 7 and got booed but it was fun.

Not sure if I will get a balcony again. We had it, and I went out there like once. Really a waste of money.

Did like the steakhouse on board. First time in many years I got lamb chops.

Vegas is a shit hole. That is why sites like Yelp exist. Write a bad review, talk about what sucked. In America, if you pay good money, you expect good service. This is why Vegas sucks.

You shouldn't have to work the phones and have a high status level and haggle with the check-in desk to get a decent experience. To quote Don Draper, that is what the money is for.

An advantage to living in a diverse city is learning cultural practices unimaginable until you see an ad for said practice available in a 50s/60s strip mall, Sahara Ave west of the strip.

Surprised you think balcony is a waste of money.

Having my own balcony is my favorite thing about cruising. Very nice to bring some food (or just a Coke) out to the balcony, sit there, and look at either the scenery or the open ocean. I find it very relaxing, especially if it's warm outside.

Also, if there's things to see, it's brutal to have to fight with huge crowds of people on the top of the ship. It's so much of a better experience to have your own private space.

You are correct that cruising can suck if you aren't experienced with what it is and isn't. You're also right that a lot of the shows range between mediocre and shitty. Too many people do cruises believing it to be a memorable life experience where it will be nonstop fun. In reality, cruising's best feature is convenience. You can get to a lot of places within a short time, with no packing/unpacking, including those which are difficult to visit (such as islands). Food is always available. Basically you get to just sit there for a week and everything you need is provided. And if you do things correctly, it can be a GREAT deal, but most people are stupid about it and don't spend efficiently. I used to get people really angry on cruise forums when I broke the news to them that their year-in-advance cruise purchase netted them a horrible deal. Wasn't trying to troll, it was more like tough love. When I got burnt out on cruising for awhile, I said fuck it and posted a guide on how to get the cheapest prices. Lots of people thanked me for that. Gave away a lot of my secrets.

"Should" and reality are two different things in Vegas.

For the baller always getting comped suites, you don't need to do this.

For the midgrade people like me -- ones with Diamond status but no suites and not an impressive casino play history -- you need to call ahead and know what to ask for.
