COVID has milded itself out further, and hardly anyone is dying from it now, aside from super old people. It is very rare for anyone who is under 70 and at least semi-healthy to get hospitalized from it now.
Anyone healthy/non-elderly person wearing masks to avoid COVID is a complete retard at this point.
Anyone getting a vaccine for it (again, except for the elderly) is also a complete retard at this point.

Honestly, despite how wacky the left was regarding COVID, I thought they would at least acknowledge when it was essentially over. That still hasn't happened. It is funny talking to the left wing COVID fanatics nowadays, as most of them have quietly stopped masking and vaxxing, but they can't coherently explain why.
We've actually got a funny situation here. When COVID was actually a danger in 2020-2021, the right misportayed it as essentially being the flu. The left sanctimoniously chided the right for 2 years about this, and while they were wrong about a lot of things policy-wise (and lied to the people fairly often), they were correct that it was a dangerous disease. However, once Omicron 2022, COVID transformed into what the right had been claiming it was all along! So COVID basically mutated into the right's initially inaccurate claim about it. The left had a very hard time explaining this to people, so in order to avoid looking like they were wrong all the way, they just played down the massive difference in Omicron, and pretended COVID danger was still a thing.
This is all a perfect case study as to why you don't politicize a novel virus.
It's also a case study as to why science needs to completely stay independent of politics, and why censoring opposing viewpoints in science is a disaster.
Lots of extra lives were lost, lots of kids were unnecessarily kept out of school, the economy unncessarily suffered, and people permanently lost trust in public health officials. Not good.
The correct way to have done all this?
Both sides should have agreed not to bicker with each other, and join forces with a singular goal to handle this optimally. Then the TRUTH should have been disseminated -- the truth about masks (no proof they worked), the truth about the disease itself (very dangerous to elderly, moderately dangerous to middle-aged, not dangerous to young adults and kids), the truth about the vaccine (it was a risk but not as big of a risk as COVID for those 45+), and the truth about the origin (likely a lab escape in Wuhan).
All of the "noble lies" ruined public trust forever.

This is interesting, because the left insisted that they were "following the science" regarding masking, lockdowns, school closures, etc. And yet their restrictive policies did not result in any better results. In fact, when you adjusted for percentage elderly population, the blue states often did worse!
Yes, this changed after the vaccine was released. They had a lower percentage of the vulnerable population taking the vaccine in red states, and this resulted in extra deaths. If you remember, I was one of the Republicans who was urging people 45+ to take the vaccine, both on Twitter and PFA. In hindsight, this was correct on my part. It's also why I don't regret getting shots #1-3 (all in 2021), but I do regret the last one during the Omicron days in 2022. I was definitely in the range of the people who could have died from 2020-21 COVID, and the risk there was substantially higher than the risk of vaccine harm to me.
There is no question that the right also politicized COVID. I tried to be one of the sane right wing voices, though obviously my following is limited. I did convince some fellow right wingers who were 45+ to change their minds and take the vaccine.
This doesn't absolve the left of any of their stupidity, though. The noble lies, the anti-science rhetoric, the censorship of opposing viewpoints, and manipulation of statistics was disgusting. It also contributed to the right deciding to reject anything coming from the left, regarding COVID, including the vaccine. The left became the boy who cried wolf. They lied so many times about COVID, that by the time they were telling the truth (that the vaccine was useful), a lot of people didn't believe them.
That's what I found so amazing about the sanctimonious left. They lied and lied and lied about COVID, and then when the vaccine was released, they yelled, "OMG OMG OMG why are people not listening to the experts????"
More open to that perspective now, really should be merged into that 'why is US a shithole now' thread.
I have become more moderate since then and wonder how I would react if it blew up tomorrow instead of 2020 now that my son is 4.
He was born right as the masks became ubiquitous and the hospital had triage tents set up in case of crisis. I had it early as well where it famously cucked my lungs and stamina. As an athletic guy in my mid 30's I remember thinking how brutal it would hit the old and weak.
I chilled out post-OG vaccine and remember it feeling especially dumb coming back to Oregon after visiting my mother-in-law in Minnesota when nobody wore a mask.
Physical stamina was again down for a stretch after I had it this October, bounced back faster than 2020, could be I'm just weak.

The issue is not the Trump-bashing obituary. It is understandable that, in June 2020, his family was tricked by the media and left wing politicians into believing that cloth masking was the difference between ending COVID and killing everyone.
It is amazing how they have no cross words for the worst part of this whole thing -- the fact that none of his loved ones were allowed in the hospital, to see him take his dying breaths and say goodbye! Dude died all alone. Awful. And COVID had spread so heavily by June 2020, there was no hope in containing it, so this policy was especially indefensible.
Anyway, here we are 4 years later. It's clear that the masking didn't help. As I mentioned earlier, states with stricter mask policies did no better than states with weak mask policies, and in some cases did worse. It's also clear that we had zero shot at stopping COVID with herd immunity (or vaccines, or masking, or lockdowns), as it mutated too fast. It just had to run its course, become a much lesser health threat via mutations (very common for deadly viruses), and accept that it's a new, endemic flu-like threat to very old people. I don't blame people in 2020 for not realizing this, but LOL @ still thinking in 2024 that this guy wouldn't have caught COVID and died, had only those damn Republicans masked better. But you can see that in the comments.

The amazing thing in 2024 is that we have a relatively small portion of the population with a sensible view of the COVID vaccines.
We have one large portion believing the vaccines were useless and killed a lot of people.
We have another large portion believing that the vaccines were safe, effective, and largely responsible for bringing COVID to the much lesser state it's in now.
The truth is exactly in between. The vaccines were rushed, full of side effects, and definitely the most dangerous common vaccine in existence. At the same time, they were very effective at preventing death and major illness among those 45+. Vaccines were also initially good at preventing symptomatic COVID, but wore off after 4 months, and also didn't stop symptomatic infection with Omicron (2022 and beyond). Vaccines were a huge net positive for those over 45, a mild net positive for those 35-44, and probably a net negative for people under 35.
Vaccinating boys and young men was especially a mistake, given what was discovered about myocarditis (and first covered up, then admitted to being a real problem).
The vaccine did NOT lead to the milding and decline of COVID. That happened on its own due to the Omicron mutation -- an abrupt change in the virus which turned it into something almost completely different (and far less dangerous). Very few Americans realize that it was the Omicron mutation which put an end to the COVID threat. That abrupt mutation saved many millions of lives worldwide.
Unfortunately this truth is too complex and nuanced for most Americans to want to digest, so instead we have a simplistic view that the vaccine was either wonderful or terrible.
