Yea it doesn't really show anything they say it does. It would be easier to believe if we couldn't actually read the email. Winning the primaries by using strategies that make you lose the presidential election is kinda stupid. Sure it's something an orange blob would do and then wonder where his support from the other nominees went, but campaigns that aim to win the election don't. It really is just common sense.
Also the pay off they are referring to is fairly clear from the context. It's not a bag of money. It's an obscure thingie called "Good will". It's based on the concept of doing nice things to others so that when you need something in the future you're more likely to get it from them.
