they simply have no choice, there is no other card for them to play but to quietly slip into the nearest political tarpit.

plus, attacking hillary's "shady" dealings gives them an opportunity to shift tone/narrative away from their religious conservatism, which will have to be a fundamental theme of their rebranding if they wish to reclaim the center of the political octagon.
