I had a cousin in Florida who was ridiculously smart but also mentally ill. He decided one day to quit taking his meds and just started traveling cross country living on the streets. The family lost touch with him for probably 4 or 5 years before getting a call from the police somewhere in Oregon that he got stabbed to death by another homeless guy.

When I was in college, there was a homeless PhD guy who was known to be a genius but completely cracked and went crazy.

It was straight out of the Lazlo character from Real Genius, but even worse. At least Lazlo was coherent. This guy wasn't.

He would spend his entire day on dumb terminals at the library (simple computers only used to connect to the network) and typing gibberish for like 15 hours straight.

He wouldn't be connected anywhere, and would just be repeatedly typing gibberish on the screen where you would issue a command to connect somewhere.

I once looked over his shoulder, and while he was typing words, they didn't make any sense.

Someone later explained his story to me, and I sometimes saw the dude sleeping in the park in Isla Vista (the college town adjacent to UCSB).
