My next big purchase will probably be a smoker, but word of mouth on this thing has piqued my interest:
also can we talk about how smoked chicken tastes like shit?
a lot of things taste better smoked, but for me, chicken is not one of them
Gramps made a smoker the ole fashioned way. Out of brick. He also made an outhouse in the backyard and likes whittling wood. I wish would have kept one of those pieces.
I just have the Basic 49.99 charcoal thing u get from home depot somewhare in the back on a pile..
It goes great with 20foot by 20foot of grass i have in back of my house... im balling when i bbq
The green egg is the nuts. You aren't going to smoke a pork shoulder every week, but I find ways to use it for other stuff. You can use it as a standard charcoal style bbq, too.

Burgers come out great.
The Big Green Egg is quite expensive, especially once you add on all the extras like the cover and smoking stone. Two years ago I bought a significantly cheaper knock-off from Walmart: http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/king-gri.../6000187028393
Also available through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-1.../dp/B00GJEPTJS (if you feel like helping Druff out)
Not sure if the brand is "Akorn" or "King-Griller" or "Char-Griller" or what. I also haven't tried a BGE so I can't comment on whether it's comparable. However, it was a third of the price of a similar sized Egg. I must say this is the best purchase I've made in the past 10 years. I use it at least twice a week (even in the dead of the Canadian winter when I'm up to my tits in snow). There's a bit of a learning curve at first if you're not used to working with charcoal. The tricky part is getting familiar with regulating temperature. Once you nail that you're off to the races.
It's fine for cooking things you'd normally do on any other grill like steaks, burgers and dogs. But it's best for smoking meats: whole chickens, ribs, wings, pork butt, brisket. Last Christmas I smoked a turkey and it was unbelievable.
A couple of cons are that it takes a while to start up (sometimes I wish I still had my propane BBQ to quickly grill some burgers/dogs) and there's more maintenance (cleaning out the ashes after each use).
But overall I highly recommend a kamado. If you were okay with playing with Go-Bots while your friends were playing with Transformers, go ahead and buy a knock-off brand like the Akorn instead of the BGE.
